Remember when you were a kid? Before stuff got real, and the only stress you felt was in trying to be just good enough to not incur your parents’ loving wrath?
Back then we didn’t worry too much about how artistic our coloring books looked, or whether our hand-made plastic jewelry broke any fashion rules, or those loomed pot holders met safety regulations, or if our dancing was properly choreographed.
So why, once we became “responsible adults,” are we no longer allowed to have fun making and doing things? When did we start taking it so dang seriously? Who made these rules, anyway!?
Do you think creativity and art save us from seriousness and angst? I do. It helps us see with different eyes for a little while, relieves the pressure for a few minutes. Imagine a 15-minute recess every day. I’m not talking about lunch. I’m talking about a break to do something with no expectations besides simply having fun.
There’s a small playground a 5-minute walk from my house. It has swings and slides and other usual playground equipment. It’s totally kooky, but I go there from time to time to swing on the swings. (I only do it when no one else is around). Having young kids is the perfect excuse, but if you don’t, just go! Wait till it’s empty or go with a friend to feel more comfortable.
What are some things you loved in school? Water colors, finger paints, drawing? Silly Putty, Etch-a-Sketch, Legos? Playing a xylophone? Drums? If there are young kids in your house, you probably have lots of fun things already.
Yeah, you might look as silly as me! But no one has to see you; you certainly don’t have to tell anyone – I don’t! (but now you know). Have fun and unpop the cork of that creative bottle! Set yourself free!
