Pinterest is not a platform for marketing – officially. In fact, the terms of service explicitly state that direct sales content is not allowed. But that’s ok. As a digital marketer or entrepreneur who markets your biz on social media, creativity is second nature to you! So lets roll up our sleeves and get started.
Why Pinterest?
What does Pinterest have to offer that other platforms don’t? Why bother when there’s Facebook and Twitter? Because it’s a great place for indirect marketing – as in building your “tribe,” your community of followers who are fascinated by your every word and actions. Done properly, it will help build your reputation as the go-to person for insight in your niche. People are in Pinterest for inspiration and new ideas. So why not inspire them with your life-changing products and/or services?
For example, a photographer could create pinboards of nature photography techniques, or tips on photographing children, or weddings; pinboards of image editing software; pinboards of photography equipment. A chef could create pinboards showcasing their culinary creations, or cooking techniques, or suppliers. You see how you can use Pinterest to build and legitimize your brand.
Strategies
You can create pinboards that target specific demographics of followers. For example, “Music lessons for adult beginners,” “Music lessons for preschoolers,” “Music lessons for children on the autistic spectrum.”
You could hold a contest where customers post photos using your product, and award a prize for best one. The contest itself should be on your website, but use Pinterest to send them there.
Post images of your works in progress or design ideas, or different versions of a song, or clothing design – and ask your followers for their opinion on which is better.
Yo could create a pinboard directing followers to your YouTube channel or other places where your valuable content can be seen.
It’s all about hanging out where your ideal client hangs out. Remember to cross-promote! Be sure there’s a Pinterest “follow” button on your website along with any other platforms you use.
Start Pinning!
Now that we’ve talked about the benefits of Pinterest for your business – where to start? Go to Pinterest for business, and choose “Join as a business.” Enter your business info, and choose a category. Your profile is your opportunity to tell what your business is about. I always advise copying from your website and pasting into your social media accounts to keep it consistent. Be sure to” confirm” your website. Then create boards. Organize them in a way that would make sense to your ideal client. Imagine bulletin boards on the walls of your business (whether you have a physical location or not). What kinds of boards would you as a customer find helpful? Be sure to add a Pinterest “save” button to your website!
Then start pinning content to your boards! Remember, your goal is to attract and engage followers. Pin something at least once a day; choose pins with value and great visual appeal. Take advantage of the description area to make your posts serve a purpose. Remember to be “social,” just like the other platforms. Interact and appreciate!
