Teaching involves so many forms and goals. Classroom, tutoring, online, videos…….to learn a new skill, reach a goal, prepare school children for the future, to climb over a hurdle. Is it creative?

Consider any subject in a classroom, for example; there are as many different ways of teaching it as there are teachers. You’ve learned the mechanics, psychology, and subject matter. But your personality and passions color your work, don’t they?

Art is creating something that started as a spark of an idea that turns into a vision. When I was making a list of creative topics to write about this month, I included teaching. In my view, it’s a creative act. Creative artists choose to use certain tools; teachers also do. Artists go through a trial-and-error process (called “practice”) in order to perfect their craft. And – maybe I feel this way as a teacher myself – it’s a kind of “performance.” Your tone of voice, choice of words, sometimes hiding behind your “teacher” persona when necessary. Often, it is a role.

I think entrepreneurs whose business is teaching people have about the most freedom to be artistic. After all, your business should be a reflection of who you really are and what you believe in. Many businesses are not successful when the owner’s heart and soul just aren’t into it.

Like me writing this on a Sunday night. Usually I do my writing in the morning since that’s when my brain feels like it. But Sundays are for sleeping in. I got a late start, then had a pit orchestra rehearsal for several hours – and I love it! If writing – especially about being creative – wasn’t on my passion list, you can bet I never would have done it. But I promised myself I’d write an article for my blog every single day in January. I couldn’t bring myself to do it without that creative passion.

The thing that’s fantastic about being an entrepreneur? It allows you to serve a bigger and loftier purpose than working for someone else. You usually end up being a teacher of something, and you create the purpose, subject, tools, and outcome you want.

Is teaching an art form for you?
